• Despite an increase of more than 30% in Britain's exports of commercial vehicles, our trade defecit in CVs increased by almost 50% in the first quarter of this year because of rocketing imports.
In the first quarter CV imports were worth a record £426 million — up almost 43% on 1988.
So far this year Britain's CV manufacturers have built 89,700 vehicles, an increase of 38%.
Winning trip • HGV driver Douglas Lawrence has won a free fact-finding trip to Denmark and the Netherlands, courtesy of Commercial Motor and Castro!.
Lawrence, who works for Horizon Farm Egg Packers in Cornwall, but plans to set up as an operator, impressed judges with his interest in finding out about the flower export market from these countries.
An account of his trip will appear in Commercial Motor later this year.
