What is claimed to be the world's first nobile quick-freeze plant has been built itilizing seven American Fruehauf trailers. ;:ar use in freezing fish caught off the vlexican coast of Baja, California, the plant vas designed and built by Kohlenberger, no of Fullerton, California. for Proinsa, La Paz fishing firm.
There are only two food freezing plants n Baja and both are located at considerable listances from most fishing ports, so it s normally many days before the fish ;an be frozen. With the mobile plant howarer, which can be transported to the port iearest to the fishing fleet's operation, he day's catch can be frozen as soon is the boats are in.
The entire plant is built on seven aandard 40ft Fruehauf trailers. Mounted in one of them is a diesel-powered generator ;et while a second platform trailer carries he refrigeration machinery.
Two Fruehauf refrigerated vans are used 'or quick-freezing the catch and two others 'or storage of the frozen fish awaiting ransportation to domestic or foreign narkets. The seventh trailer also a -efrigerated van, makes ice for the fishing 'oats.
Temperature in the freezing unit is main.ained at —25 degrees Fahrenheit, while .he storage unit holds 0 degrees F. Both inks operate in an ambient temperature )f +95deg F. The tight precision conaruction and excellent foam insulation of he vans contribute to holding these low nside temperatures.
This concept of a mobile refrigeration ilant has many potential applications in agriculture. It can be used in the field or orchard for cooling or freezing produce immediately after picking — improving quality, eliminating spoilage and lengthening shelf life. Growers do not have to rely on distantly located refrigeration plants.
The trailers used for this mobile quickfreeze plant are of standard design and readily available.
