AN entirely new range of four-wheeldrive loading shovels, has recently been introduced by the Chaseside Engineering Co., Ltd., Hertford. It is known as the Chaseside Super-Loadmaster range and the three models currently in production arc the SLM2000, the SLM1500 and the SLM1000.

winch motor (Type M5S) announced recently by C.A.V., Ltd., is intended is the driving of winches on commercial vehicles. The motor, which has a 5-in.diameter shell, is totally enclosed, series wound, and suitable for either direction of rotation. It develops 1.9 h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m., at which speed the torque is 4.9 lb.-ft.

All three shovels have a number of features in common. These include, a "Safety Side Arm" design giving an improved discharge height and forward reach, but combining a highdegree of stability; all-round • unobstructed vision for the operator; 45° pry-out movement combined with 65° angle of discharge; and a three-jack hYdraulic system for side arm and bucket controls.

brake which automatically applies a resisting torque of 8.5 lb.-ft. to hold the motor shaft stationary when no work is being done. The brake is released by electro-rnagnetic means when the motor is energized. Provision is also made for remote manual release of the brake by a flexible cable. The motor is built for flange mounting and weighs 27 lb. Both 12and 24-v. versions are available— types M5S12-4B and M4S24-3B respectively.

A typical application would be to drive a winch through a reduction gear with a ratio of 230: 1 which would enable a load of six tons to be hauled up a slope of I in 4, requiring a line pull of 3,360 1b. Current consumption for this duty would be 250 amp. (12 v.) or 130 amp. (24 v.).
