r'HANNEL AIRWAYS, LTD., %-• applied unsuccessfully to the Deputy South Eastern Licensing Authority, Mr. 'A. C. Shepherd, at Southampton last week for permission to operate three vehicles carrying Channel Islands produce between Portsmouth Airport and the London market.
The airline sought a limited B licence to cover the carriage of perishable products—mainly flowers, fruit and vegetables—within 75 miles of Portsmouth Airport, including the Greater London area, and also between Southend Airport and Greater London when aircraft were diverted from Portsmouth.
For British Railways and B.R.S., who, with three private hauliers in the Portsmouth area, objected to the application, Mr. Julian Priest maintained that the case stood or fell on the flower traffic, which was confined mainly to two or three months in the year.
Hitherto this traffic had been carried by the B.T.C. and private operators, and all the customers had been satisfied with the service. If the traffic expanded as a result of Britain entering the Common Market, the objectors could cope with it.
Mr. Shepherd said that prompt delivery of airborne perishable commodities was in the public interest, and he appreciated that the trade was important to the people of the Channel Islands. But he was satisfied that abundant facilities were available to handle this traffic.
He warned, however, that if the objectors failed to provide the required service a different view would be taken of .a new application.
