AN appeal by H. L. Walker, Ltd.,of Thornaby-on-Tees, haulage contractors with a fleet of 30 vehicles, against the refusal of the Northern Licensing Authority to vary their A licence by the addition of two articulated vehicles, was dismissed by the Transport Tribunal in London last week.
The president of the Tribunal, Sir Hubert Hull, said they did not think a case had been made out showing a sufficient need for the increase.
The B.T.C. and seven other local hauliers objected to the appeal. .
Mr. J. R. C. Samuel-Gibbon, for Walker's, said one of the important aspects of the appeal was the ratio between the earnings of the appellant's own vehicles and the earnings from subcontracted vehicles. Sub-contracting was likely to be part of every haulier's business up to a point, but it was wrong if it went too far. It needed some relief to enable hauliers to do their own work with their own vehicles. The marginal relief asked for by the appellants was necessary and justified.
Mr. I. Robey, for the objectors other than B.T.C., declared there was no direct evidence of customers being inconvenienced.
