Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TWO State-owned passenger transport undertakings, CrosVille M. otor Services, Ltd., and the Eastern National Omnibus Co., Ltd., have filed their second application for all-round fares increases. The Crosville company was granted new rates last year, which were put into effect on January I last. Eastern 'National received permission to introduce higher fares on Augutt 12.

Some 650 stage and express services are affected by the Crosyille proposals, over 600 being in the North Western Area. Details of the modifications requested are not yet available, The Eastern National application is for increases on fares above 3d. single and 7d. return, rising from id. on the single tickets to 4d; on returns above 3s. 74. It is proposed to amend workmen's return rates to be 1i times the single fare, to add 10 per cent. to special fares and to add 20 per cent. to standard and non-standard season-ticket rates.

Revised Proposals The application of the East Kent Road Car Co.. Ltd., referred to in "The Commercial Motor" dated May 18, calling for a 25 per cent. increase in ordinary and return fares, has been amended. Protests concerning the scale of the proposed variations had been made by numerous local authorities, referring in particular to the fact that the company was paying a 25 per cent. dividend. • The general manager of East Kent, Mr R. G. James, stated last week that smaller advances than those originally proposed would be asked for. He added, however, that further increases might have to be asked for at.the end of the year.

New workmen's return rates and children's fares were introduced by Nottingham Corporation last Sunday. These provide a minimum 'workmen's return of 2d. (for two lid. stage journeys); a minimum children's fare of Id., rising to 21d. for a 4Id. journey, and increases of id. on certain ordinary single fares on parts of 12 routes. This has resulted in the minimum single fare on some of the SeiViCCS becoming 2d.

Grimsby's New Seale

Grimsby Corporation introduced new charges on bus services this morning. Thc minimum ordinary ticket remains at lid. and in no case is the fare amended by more than id, Trolleybus rates remain unchanged. The corporation transport manager, Mr. H. R. Snow, indicated at the hearing of the application that trolley/mg operation was profitable, and that as the new motorbus charges would not prevent a deficit, the trolleybuses were subsidizing the motorbuses. To cope with a loss of £16,415 last year, staff had been cut by 10 per cent. and mileage reduced by 159.m.

Both motorbus and trolleybus rates will shortly be increased at Cardiff, the Ministry of Transport having given the necessary permission following the decision of the South Wales Licensing Authority concerning motorbus fares.

Bury Corporation, the application of which was reported in "The Commercial Motor" last week, has also been a32 authorized to raise charges. Despite this, a deficit of 0,761 is expected this year. The North Western Licensing Authority, granting the application, stipulated that his permission would be .required if it were desired to transfer surplus revenue to the general rate fund.

Belfast Transport Committee has rejected the suggestion of a 2d, minimum ticket put forward by the undertaking's

transport manager. A special subcommittee has been appointed to examine the fares position.

A supplementary rate of 6d. would be required to assist Portsmouth Transport Department if the application now before the South Eastern Licensing Authority failed, it was stated last week. The undertaking is now running at a loss of £1,500 a week.

Other applications have been made by the following: Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Transport Board and 11 joint operators requesting lid, minimum tickets and id. additions to single rates on 28 routes; Rhondda Transport Co., Ltd. (23 routes), sliding scale based on lid. per mile; Gellygaer Urban District Council (seven services), all-round additions; Grenville Motors, Ltd., Camborne, Cornwall (nine services).

Schedules .of standard fares on all express' services from London have now been published by the Metropolitan Licensing Authori:y.
