Chambers of Commerce and the Federation of British Industries met the Minister of Transport, Mr. Alfred . Barnes, to discuss the shortcomings of the nationalized transport undertaking. Mr. C. E. Jordan, chairman of the transport committee of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, . told Mr. Barna that whilst the Road Haulage Executive might do well with small . parcels and trunk loads, it could not

. deal _effectively with 15-cwt.. loads. In the old days, free hauliers had maintained personal contact with their customers and the goods had been delivered on time. Now, goods by ioad were transhipped as often as they were by rail. , • • , Mr. Barnes' replied that the matter should not have been referred to him, but to the chairman of the British Transport Commission. This course will be taken.

. Mr. Jordan informed Mr. Barnes that he did not think that the consultative committees served any useful purpose for trade and industry., •

Mr. Jordan gaVe this information to a meeting of the transport Committee of the Birmingham Chamber. He advised the Chamber not to Support hauliers. in the use of vehicles under C hiring allowances in cirCumstance& that would enable hauliers to evade the 25-mile limit.

Mr. Jordan has been appointed chairman of the transport sub-committee of the home affairs and transport committee of the A.B.C.C. Mr. W. H. Wilcox, transport 'manager .1;)f the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., has been asked to Serve on the transport committee of the Birmingham Chamber.
