HAVING evolved a national rates schedule for the carriage of new furniture and standard conditions of carriage, the Road Haulage Executive is to implement them on July I.

Negotiations were conducted between officers of Pickfords New Furniture Carriage Service and the British Furniture Manufacturers' Federated Associations, which led to the drawing up of the schedule and the conditions, and Pickfords hoped to put them into force on May I. The manufacturers, however, asked for a postponement as no

decision had been reached on their application to the Board of Trade to raise the prices of furniture.

Pickfords now feels that it is not reasonable for its service to be expected to continue to carry at "uncommercial rates" and will impose the new charges on July 1. By that time, it is hoped that the Board of Trade, which has already had the manufacturers' application in hand for five months, will have granted a price increase which will enable furniture makers to meet the new charges. Pickfords New Furniture Carriage Service, which has been in operation since February, is closely integrated with the removals side, so that full use can be made of available vehicles. A new type of L400-cubic-ft, pantechnicon has been introduced to augment facilities and to replace many unsuitable vehicles which were acquired. It is illustrated at the foot of this page. It is intended to build a large sorting depot in Tottenham to handle this

district's furniture production. This depot, which would include office and maintenance facilities, is likely to cost up to £200,000. Similar depots will be established at High Wycombe and at any other centre justifying the need, Mr. T. H. Stacey, manager of the service, told Press representatives last week.
