Horses to be Excluded from Westminster's Busy Streets?

The view that horsed vehicles should be excluded, during busy hours, from the main streets of the city, is expressed in the report of a special sub-committee of Westminster City Council. It is further recommended that the statutory provisions requiring slow-moving traffic to keep to the kerbside should be more strictly enforced.

The committee is averse to placing unnecessary restrictions on motor users in connection with parking and the loading and unloading of goods at the roadside, but considers that certain measures should be taken to .prevent obstruction to traffic.

In 11 streets in Westminster, taxicab drivers are prohibited from loitering. It is considered that, in future, factories and similar business premises should be provided with loading bays off the highways.

In connection with the Road Traffic Bill, the Parliamentary Bills Committee of Glasgow Corporation recommends that the Clause relating to a general speed limit of 30 m.p.h. in built-up areas be amended to provide that the limit shall apply to all streets in towns, and to roads in populous places where buildings have been erected on both sides. • The Clause as to the exemption of fire-engines, etc., from speed limits should, it is recommended, be amended so as to exclude from the limit vehicles used by tramways undertakings for emergency repairs to overhead equipment. Another amendment related to cyclists' rear lights. .„
