Undergound Tanks Constructed of Welded Steel Galvanized to Resist Corrosion.

BRABY AND CO., LTD., Ida and Victoria Works, Deptford, S.E. 8, have been Makers of storage

tanks for over half a century, and have thus had exceptional experience in this class of work. As regards their tanks for the underground storage of motor spirit, they have etandardized a range of cylindrical tanks in capacities of from 60 to 5,000 gallons. These are designed to be positioned vertically if of less than 1,000 gallon capacity, and horizontally in the larger sizes. The company ears, however, supply special ,tanks to euit the re

quirements of customers. Every tank is heavily galvanized inside and out With zinc, which is particularly important where solvents of paint, such as benzole, have,to be stored.

The tanks are made with raised manhole necks, which considerably reduce the cost of labour and material in concreting over the tank. The standard tanks are also provided with capacious sumps and

auxiliary, suction pipes, which enable any -water, which v have entered the tank with the petrol, to be withdrawn.

The filling pipe is carried to the bottom of the tank to prevent evaporation through splashing while filling, and also to minimize the risk of fire. In these

tanks also the fuel is filtered as it enters.

the tank, and the vent pipe protected by a'device called by the company a Petrolvent. This appliance consists of a welded box ' containing automatically doeing inlet and outlet valves, thus preventing evaporation of the spirit and acting as a safeguard against explosion. The valve ducts are closed by renew. able, safety gauze panels. The tanks are constructed of welded steel, and are tested thoroughly under pressure before being permitted to leave the works. If .required, accessories to enable the contents of barrels to be syphoned into the 'storage tanks can be supplied, .but most users prefer to obtain their supplies of spirit in bulk from tank wagons. Various other fittings for the supply of measured quantities of petrol can also be obtained from the company. One inter esting device is an appliance built on the "penny-in-the-slot " principle, which delivers the exact measure of fuel upon the insertion of a tally, thus correct reecirds can be kept of the petrol sup plied to each vehicle. This appliance is particularly suitable for taxicab and similar garages. The measure of petrol may be one-half to five gallons as required, and it is impossible for a driver c32 or purchaser to extract more petrol than the quantity to which he is entitled by the tallies used by him: The Autopetrol, as the device is known, also serves as a meter, as a continuous record is made of the number of gallons of spirit delivered. To operate the Autopetrol, all that is necessary is to insert a tally and give a half turn to the handle. The Autopetrol ha a been approved by the Board of Trade, and is certified by the Inspector of 'Weights and Measures. In the delivery system known as type E, two measuring taeks are interconnected in such a way that one is being filled whilst the other is discharging, the scale of the latter alone being visible at any time.

13y the use of two measuring tanks a cause of considerable delay is eliminated, as, where large fleets have to be supplied, the vehicles are not held up while the measuring tank is being filled.

To indicate the contents of a tank the company have perfected a device known as the GaIlometer. This .is inade in two types, one for tanks underground and the other for tanks above ground; each works upon the pritleiple of a tape 'pass

lag over guide rollers and under a mica window. The tape 'is graduated in gallons, and the reading is taken at a fixed pointer. This indicator has the advantage of being fireproof and vapour. proof ; it projects only a few inches above the tank, and the length of the scale, being not less than the depth of the tank, errors cannot occur.

For garage and similar work the company manufacture portable supply tanks. These`eare small, vertical, or horizontal cylindrical tanks supported on wheels, and with a capacity of from 20 to 100 gallons. Baffle plates are fitted inside them to prevent surging of the petrol.

Bulk storage presents many, advantages, including saving of time and transport, avoidance of waste, safety from fire, cheaper fuel, and an accurate check on coesusention.
