Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

out by foreign firms

• A series of Hampshire hauliers working out of Portsmouth Port have gone out of business as foreign-registered trucks take over their work.

Maddison Haulage of Fareham ceased trading in early June when the Government's latest VED and diesel tax hikes proved the final straw.

Proprietor Bob Maddison has written to the Prime Minister outlining the catastrophic effects of Government taxation on the UK haulage industry (see letters, page 24). Maddison, who ran three trucks, says 2164,000 out of his 2,248,000 turnover went to the Treasury in fuel duty and taxes during the last financial year.

He adds that at least 27 other drivers in the Fareham and Gosport area have lost their jobs recently. "It is cheaper for Portuguese and Spanish hauliers to deliver across the UK," he warns. "They have put us out of business."

• Norbert Dentressangle closed its fareham base in April with the loss of 24 drivers' jobs.
