Confirmation that the police will be putting their vehicle fleet maintenance out to tender came in the publication of the White Paper for police reform. At present most maintenance, garaging and cleaning is handled in-house.

Although changes are probably still two years off, fleet engineers at the 43 forces have already been asked to collate information on the exact cost of their function to assist in-house tenders.

The Home Office is also considering contracting out some areas of police work, including fleet management and the escorting of heavy loads.

The Road Haulage Association is opposed to privatised escorts because it fears the cost would be passed on to hauliers.
