SCANIA has decided not to market an eight-wheeler, although it has already supplied one to BP Sweden. The, "one-off" chassis was built specifically for thie application and will be used as a development prototype only.

The eight-wheeler was reguested by BP Sweden as a possible answer to the manoeuvrability problem associated with the 12m (39ft 4in) artics and the rigids with single axle trailers currently in use.

Swedish regulations restrict an eight-wheeler to 26 tonnes (25.6tons) gvw but BP Sweden is prepared to accept this to try a more compact machine.

Known as the LBS 111, the Scania eight-wheeler has a single drive bogie because it will be used purely as an on-road machine.

The mechanical units are manufactured to the familiar Scania 111 specification with a turbocharged DS 11 engine developing 205kW (276bhp) at 2,200rpm coupled to a GR 860 10-speed splitter box.

With a wheelbase of 5.9m (19ft 4ins) — the Swedish definition is from the centre line of the front axle to the centre line of the third — the Scania eight-legger has a kerb weight of 8.7 tonnes (8tons llcwt).

Although the exercise is to develop the eight-wheeler prototype (especially in the area of kerb weight), Scania has stressed that there are no plans to market the vehicle.
