WHITE Paper proposals to give more money to bus companies in rural areas will be "the first step towards restoring those bus services" announced Transport Minister William Rodgers this week.
Mr Rodgers went on to say: "I hope that whereas public transport has been eroded, meaning that bus services have declined everywhere and have become slower and less convenient, this (the White Paper) will help to restore those services.
"I think it is a charter for rural areas, because that's where we've seen people being obliged to buy a car, if they can, because there are no buses."
The Minister explained he believed it should be the responsibility of the people 'on the sppt' to organise the running of local public transport, and not someone sitting in Whitehall.
"I'm placing upon the county councils outside the main towns, a new responsibility for producing plans and really getting on with meeting the needs of local people."
