Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

RIMSBY'S first LDOY Contest must be rated a success. The organization was class, the weather was kind, and all conied were greatly indebted to Courtaulds , whose large car park at Great Coates rks provided ample room for the man'ring tests. Competitors and visitors well looked after in the firm's canteen. Ifty-two drivers from 15 firms tried their : (and skill). There were no entries in ss A and only one in Class C, but Classes ), E(2) and F(1) attracted nine entrants and Class H had 10.

'he road driving section was well super

d by a number of volunteer police :ers. The scorecards I checked penalized trs for bad positioning, corner cutting, r hand signals or for failing to use, or r enthusiastic use of, winkers.

)ne driver was criticized for having his it elbow on his window frame; another, ) could not understand why he lost 20 its at a road check, was penalized for t of consideration for other road users bad positioning.

V. Dannett (Birds Eye Foods Ltd.) must e had an off day as he clocked up 1,329 alty points. This contrasted with some ellent driving by many drivers of large fits, notably that of Roy Fenwick, who handled his 42 ft.-long Continental Oil (UK) Ltd. tanker with great verve. He was unlucky in failing to win Class H.

A marshal reported to the clerk of the course, Mr. M. H. Pyett, that Fenwick had been helped by signals from colleagues in Test 3. For some time it appeared that the driver was to be disqualified for this, but the stewards very sensibly decided to allow Fenwick to repeat the test, with the crowd well away from the test area. Fenwick's second try was not quite so good as his first, and the York Trailer cup was won by W. Jerrard, a Shell-Mex tanker driver.

It should not be necessary to remind competitors to carry their driver's licence. One driver at Grimsby was disqualified for reporting without it. Rules are rules!

Next year, I understand, the organizers hope there will be some more cups to contend for-although the display at the prizegiving was not thin. The organizing secretary, Mr. S. A. Sears (McVeigh Transport Ltd.) and the chairman, Mr. A. Harvey (Harveys Transport Ltd.) deserve credit for a successful LDOY launch. J.D.
