STERDAY at the White City Stadium,

London, Crane Fruehauf Trailers Ltd. held a preview of a tour which has been organized to show models recently introduced by the company. The tour is to visit Bristol, Warrington, Wakefield, Newcastle, Bathgate (Scotland), Measham and Norwich and at each centre operators will be able to inspect and discuss the features of the units with the maker's engineers.

Among the vehicles on show at the preview was the new Con-Leader container chassis.

Other vehicles shown were a Vanguard insulated van hauled by a Mercedes-Benz 30-ton tractive unit, the 850 Cu. ft. powder tanker featured in an article in COMMERCIAL MOTOR on February 11 this year, a 10-ton, knock-out-axle, low-loader with a Ford D-Series tractive unit, a 10-ton semi-lowloader and a 20-ton tandem-axle straightframe semi-trailer hauled by a Guy Warrior tractive unit.

Also on show was the company's newest addition to its range, a 30/32-ton aluminium bodied tipping semi-trailer.

This is one of a new range of American Fruehauf-designed models introduced into the UK. Large numbers are already operat

ing in other parts of the world. The units have light alloy bodies and will be available in three different chassis lengths which will enable them to be used at the maximum permitted gross train weights with different tractive units.

The standard Crane .Fruehauf tipper chassis frame which has 22 in. by 4 in. fabricated I-beam main-members and full depth cross-members is used. To allow operation at 32 tons with a two-axle tractive unit, the semi-trailer is available with a three-axle bogie when it has a chassis length of 28.5 ft. Body side heights of 3 ft. 5 in. and 4 ft. 5 in. can be supplied, giving capacities of 25.5 and 33 cu. yd. respectively.

Body sizes on the tandem-aided units are identical for both applications, there being two lengths, 27 ft. and 28.5 ft., whilst they retain the side heights of 3 ft. 5 in. and 4 ft. 5 in. For operation with two-axle tractive units at 30 tons, two chassis lengths are offered, these being 28.5 ft. and 29,5 ft. When used with three-axle tractive units at 32 tons, shorter chassis lengths of 25 ft. 7.5 in. and 27 ft. 1.5 in. are provided.

The bodies are welded throughout and a feature of the top-hinged tailgate is that it slopes forward so that when the body is lowered there is always positive closing. A second feature is the use of tailgate locks which are operated by two air-pressure cylinders, these being controlled by a push-button situated either in the cab or adjacent to the rear of the semi-trailer.

Tipping is by a five-stage ram of American design. The ram is centre mounted and gives tipping angles of 47 or 50° according to the length of the body. Hydraulic power for the ram can be provided either by a power take-off or from an auxiliary engine mounted on the semitrailer.

The bodies incorporate radiused corners to give fast, clean tipping, and are reinforced at 18 in. centres throughout their length by 3 in.-section top-hat members.

Unladen weights are claimed to range from 5.2 tons for a three-axle 33 cu. yd. unit, to 4.5 tons for a tandem-axled 24.5 cu. yd. unit. Running gears on the tandem-axled versions will be available equipped with either low-profile tyres or conventional wheel and tyre equipment. The three-axle models are supplied on single tyres with centre-knave wheels. Three-line air braking is standard on all models. as are the 16.5 in. by 7 in. brake units all of which are S-cam operated.

Optional fifth-wheel rubbing-plate heights of 3 ft. 10.5 in. and 4 ft. 2 in. are available throughout the range. and steel wings and two speed landing gear are standard equipment.
