Ar a meeting of the National Council for the Omnibus Industry held in London on Friday, the employers' representatives replied to the case presented by the trade unions in support of their claim of March 1, 1966, for a substantial increase in the rates of pay for all staff.
The claim was referred to a special committee in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the council. It affects some 100,000 workpeople on the company side of the provincial bus industry.
Company busmen through their unions had, of course, asked for a rise on the lines of the 6.6 per cent claim recently approved for London Transport crews by the National Board for Prices and Incomes. Readers will recall that the company crews' claim was rejected by the Board, which stipulated that municipal and company busmen should not receive more than Mr. George Brown's norm of 3 to 3-1 per cent.
Many provincial company bus chairmen have already expressed great concern that even this smaller rise should be granted.
