Stand 158 Steam Wagons.
The Yorkshire, in its latest guise, has the distinction of being the first successful effort to build a steam. wagon on the lines of the petrol vehicle so far as its transmission is concerned. The 7-ton chassis has a vertical engine in the cab with the crankcase built as a unit with the threespeed gearbox and the substantial combined torque and thrust spherical joint; behind this comes an enclosed propeller shaft, and a rear axle of the pot type with bevel and spur double-reduction gearing. Ackerman steering is employed, and the stub-axle pivots are within the wheel hubs. Braking is effected by two independently operated shoes in each rear-wheel drum Next to this is a 6-ton chain-driven wagon with mechanically operated end-tipping gear of the run-back-aucl-tip-evErtype actuated by a horizontal screw.
Finally, there is a 34-ton steam wagon chassis fitted with a special body, etc., for gully cleansing and street watering. The tractor which was catalogued is not on view.
