This time last year, the tipper market was in rude health. Building projects. community regeneration and road improvements were leading the way.

Tip-Ex 2008, which was held at Harrogate, reflected a strong and healthy sector.

From here to 2012, the construction market has a lot going on, with a majority of projects linked to the Olympic Games and its related regeneration programme. The problem is, for many, this work is still too far off for it to have any real effect on the current climate Additionally, in recent years, the tipper market has always been viewed as being safe as houses for operators and manufacturers. Over recent years, operators have been progressively shifting towards lighter and more powerful products. depending on their aggregate or muckaway persuasion, and automated transmissions have been increasing in numbers in both sectors.

Manufacturers have been trying to find ways to increase their marketshare in a sector that is dominated by Daf, Hino, Scani a and Volvo.

Between them, these companies tend to fall back on tried and tested methods. while adopting lighter. more powerful drivelines.

During 2008, Renault Trucks introduced the Lander, while IvecoTrucks unveiled the Eurotrakker; it's got to a stage that all truck providers make something strong for this particular area of the market.

Unfortunately, its likely that the French and Italians will struggle to make the sort of inroads into the marketplace enjoyed by Hino when it hit the ground running ahead of the current global credit crunch.

However, in a market that is starved of work everyone is probably in the same boat.

While production volumes might suffer, marketshare for these companies could improve if the purchase price and aftermarket package is competitive.
