Mitsubishi's van version of the latest five-door Outlander is a soft-roader rather than an out-and-out off-roader. It copes well with pot-holed farm tracks, but the lack of a set of low-ratio gears, plus restricted ground clearance, means that only the foolhardy will try to tackle more demanding terrain.
On paved road it is an excellent performer. Its Volkswagenderived engine pumps out all the power you're likely to need, and delivers it smoothly to the accompaniment of a slick gear change and a smooth ride. You get sharp handling, too. plus the capacity to shift more than 600kg of cargo.
