Still bearing a strong resemblance to the original Land Rover, which was launched some 60 years ago, Defender underwent some major changes around 18 months ago.
Out went the old 2.5-litre diesel, to be replaced with a 2.4-litre lump borrowed from Ford's Transit and married to a sixspeed gearbox. Changes were made to the suspension, too, and the interior underwent a major redesign, with a dashboard borrowed from Freelander and a decent heating and ventilation system fitted at long last.
Some things do not alter, though, with whoever is at the wheel still uncomfortably wedged against the driver's door.
Quieter and smoother than its predecessor, the 2.4-litre lump makes driving on conventional roads a lot more pleasant. The best news of all, however, is that the changes have not affected Defender's ability off-road it remains almost impossible to beat when the going gets rough.
