Solidly built and comes with plenty of bling if you want to spend the extra, the latest Rodeo is quieter than its predecessor and offers a better ride.
The steering is more responsive, too, and the way in which even the least-powerful of the two engines delivers its torque smoothly all the way up the rev range is welcome. The slick gear change helps, and the well-designed chassis adds to the Isuzu's advantages. It helps the Thai-built load lugger cope with rough surfaces easily.
Externally, Rodeo looks tough and purposeful, but inside it is rather less attractive. Even when loaded with goodies, the interior seems a little dull, but balance that against rock-sold build quality and more ability off-road than you might expect.
Shame the range is so narrow. Why no single-cab 4x4?
