It remains a real disappointment that to this point in time Toyota has not seen fit to develop a van that can slug it out with the likes of Volkswagen's Transporter and win on points.
The vehicle giant certainly has the ability, knowledge and experience to do it, so why it has not bothered remains something of a mystery.
As it happens, Niece offers a reasonable level of performance, a perfectly acceptable gear change and a competent ride.
From around 1.1 to 1.2 tonnes, its payload capacity is nothing for it to be ashamed of, and there is no real reason to complain about its fuel economy.
Unfortunately, it is let down by what can only be described as mediocre handling, a rather dull exterior, and an even duller cab interior.
Insofar as styling is concerned, Toyota's Hiace even succeeds in making VW's Caddy Maxi look exciting, and that is quite an achievement.
Toyota is capable of so much more in the light commercial vehicle market than is being demonstrated by Hiace.
By rights, it should be up there slugging it out with the best of them and not an also-ran.
