COUNCILLORS IN THE Scottish Highlands have blocked proposals to overturn a 25-year ban on building a service station on the A9. The main road from Perth to Inverness is a notorious stretch of road. well-known for horrific accidents. Although there are several off-road service points, there is nowhere on this stretch of road where truck drivers can stop to rest or refuel.

Last month Highland Council's planning committee agreed to remove the ban after a report highlighted that 4.5 million vehicles a year use the road and up to 20% of accidents on it are caused by tiredness. However, the full council has blocked the proposal, fearing it would have a devastating economic impact on local villages that rely on the passing trade.

Kate Gibbs of the Road Haulage Association says it is disap pointed with the decision: "T are few enough areas for drive stop already but with an incr in the number of driver regulat coming into force you will acti need more. It is a short-sig action, which will do nothin improve safety."
