Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

At one time it seemed that no-one wanted used FH Volvos — but that's all changed, according to the experts at CAP Red Book.

If there has been a success story in the used commercial world over the past year it must be the rise and rise in the popularity and residuals of the FH 16 520 XL Globetrotter 6x2 tractor. It all started with the sale of a medium-sized haulage company's fleet just over 12 months ago. When the vehicles from this company arrived at auction the result surprised everyone. Even allowing for the fact that these were very highly specced tractors the bidding went remarkably high.

And not only had the trade paid very high at auction for these vehicles — in some cases they had traded them straight on again for even higher figures.

Ready and waiting at the end of this line were retail men who were more than ready to pay heavily for the privilege of owning and operating one of these tractors. So, at last, after lagging behind its used rivals for quite some time, the Volvo FH had taken on the mighty Daf XF, and the Scania R cab, and had come out not so much on top, but had re-entered as a leading player in its field.

This trend could even strengthen over the coming months. The good news as far as Volvo is concerned is that the rest of the FFI range has enjoyed an upsurge in popularity on the back of the XL cab. Red Book does not carry these precise models, due to their relative rarity and therefore the unreliably small samples on which to base a benchmark price. But even today, our opinion is that these same tractors would command up to £42,000 — not quite as heady a figure as the £48,000 achieved by some on one day, but still very solid. This is a far cry from the early days when the Fl-1 range seemed to be in danger of falling into the class of the unwanted and unloved sector of the market. •
