ONE IMMEDIATE result of the terrorist attack on the Win Towers in New York on 11 September 2001 was for civil defence measures in this country to come under closer scrutiny.

An area that was soon found wanting has now been addressed with the introduction of a government project called New Dimension to deal with terrorist attacks using nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.

The £56m project is now becoming reality with the introduction of a fleet of 80 MAN-based decontamination units.

The vehicles are day-cabbed TG-A 26-tonne 6x2 rear-steers, fitted with 360hp engines, 12speed Tipmatic transmissions and full air suspension. Bodies are purpose-built curtainsiders from Marshall SV in Cambridge, loaded to give a normal running weight of 24 tonnes.

The package includes 190 palletised pods of decontamination equipment. and each truck has a Moffett Mountie forklift for their deployment. Each pod has three cubicles equipped with changing and showering facilities and changes of clothing to decontaminate up to 200 people per hour. including stretcher cases.

The units will he operated by the fire and rescue services positioned at strategic locations throughout England and Wales.

Crews are currently being trained to use the units. which will also be available to deal with conventional incidents.
