Harold Elliott, CBE, retired from the managing directorship of Pickfords Ltd yesterday after 45 years association with the company. However, following the reorganization of Pickfords companies he has been appointed part-time chairman of the various separate activities (heavy haulage, removals, tank haulage and management services). He will continue as part-time chairman of Containerway and Roadferry Ltd, Lawther and Harvey Ltd, and Harold Wood and Sons Ltd. and as a director of Road-Air Cargo Express (International) Ltd, and Atlantic Steam Navigation Co Ltd. Charles Barron Leith, general manager of David MacBryane Ltd. has been appointed a director of the Scottish Bus Group The appointment commences today. Mr Leith entered the shipping industry as a cadet, and later joined MacBryane as assistant manager in 1935. He was appointed assistant gm in 1946. deputy gm in 1958, and gm in 1959 R. Bailey, general manager of Lancashire United Transport Ltd, has been appointed a director of the company with effect from January 1 1971.

Kenneth Armitage, 31, general manager of Runcorn Transport Services Ltd, has been appointed a director. Before joining Runcorn Transport Services 31 years ago, Mr Armitage held an executive position with Sutton and Son (St Helens) Ltd.

T. R. Grieve is to retire in August 1971 having completed 41 years service in the oil industry, the last six as chief executive of Shell-Max and BP. H. B. Greenborough has been nominated to succeed him.

J. A. Cook, marketing director of CAV, has been appointed a director of Lucas Kienzle Instruments Ltd. He succeeds W. H. Fryer. Peter Cleaver, 33, joins Mintex Ltd as market planning manager from VIP Petroleum Ltd where he was a marketing economist. At Mintex he will be responsible for longand short-term market planning.

A. A. Aldis has been appointed a national sales executive of Brown Brothers Ltd. Mr Aldis joined the company in 1936. and was promoted motor representative in 1950. Since 1962 he has served firstly as London sales area supervisor, and later as field sales manager for the Tottenham and Romford branches.

G. W. Aston, managing director of Guymers (Transportl Ltd and national chairman of the CMsponsored Lorry Driver of the Year competition, is among recently elected associate members of the Industrial Transport Association. Harry C. Grace, managing director of C. Grace and Sons. Deptford, has been elected deputy president of the Institute of the Traffic Administration.

The new loTA centre was established on December 10 at Inverness. The chairman is N. R. Sutherland, executive director of Scottish Transport Group; secretary. Capt. M. MacLeod, harbour master. Inverness Harbour Trust: education officer. R. M. Gordon, head of Department Business Studies, Inverness Technical College. Frederick Hamblen, 53, has succeeded E. 0. Walton, who has retired, as Road Haulage Association Yorkshire (Hull) area secretary. Mr Hamblett was a regular soldier and after leaving the Army joined Hull city police traffic division, for a long time being in charge of the operations and communications section, Later, he was a police driving examiner. His next appointment was as road safety officer, acting also as secretary of Hull Accident Prevention Council. K. C. Howe, 48, becomes secretary in Leeds of the Yorkshire (West Riding) area following the retirement of T. Wilkinson. Mr Kenneth Howe has been area licensing officer for the past 12 years, and previously was in industry, mainly on the transport side. In 195556 he was the Mayor of Dewsbury—the same year that W. Bridge, chairman of the RHA area, was the Lord Mayor of York.

R. W. J. Stevenson, 38. has been appointed by A. C. Penman Ltd as divisional director in charge of technical development. Mr Stevenson was appointed divisional director in charge of the coach works in '1962 when Penman joined the Scotcros Group: in 1966 he took over sales responsibilities covering the UK. D. R. Peters has been appointed group md of Bonallack and Sons Ltd and Freight Development Co Ltd, two subsidiary companies of Alcan Booth Industries whose activities are now being co-ordinated. Freight Development Company of Lancing was acquired by Alcan Booth in April. Mr Peters is a director of Alcan Booth Industries.

Roy Smirk, after 16 years with Plaxton's (Scarborough) Ltd, has joined Duple Coachbuilders Ltd as southern area sales manager. Bill Hayward, who trained with Duple, has rejoined the company, as south-eastern sales representative, from Humphrey Thompson, manufacturer of temporary windscreens.
