• An application to revise fares on services in South Shields and Newcastle upon Tyne is to be made to the Northern Traffic Commissioners in January, it was announced by the Tyneside Passenger Transport Authority last week.
If granted, the increases, of 20 per cent on most fares, will come into effect by the end of February.
A spokesman for the Tyneside PTA said that the proposed application was the result of increased costs. For 1970 the authority estimated an operating surplus of £26,000 for the South Shields area, and £129,000 for Newcastle. But when provision of £265,000 was made for replacements the Authority expected to be faced with an estimated deficit of £110,000.
Commenting on the decision to increase fares again, Ald. Neville Trotter claimed that some popular fares would be almost doubled.
Another application for fares revision has been made by the United Automobile Services Ltd, of Darlington.
Services throughout Yorkshire will be affected if the application is granted.
