• Bus companies in Cumberland were last week accused of holding a pistol to a rural council's head—by threatening to withdraw services if they were not subsidized.
At a meeting in Carlisle of Border rural council, Cllr F. MeNaughton said that the ultimatum by bus companies was like "having a pistol held to your head". Deploring the decision, he asked whether some of the rural routes could not be subsidized by the companies themselves out of more profitable routes.
The companies had told the council that they intended to seek subsidies for routes which were not self-supporting and that they would withdraw these routes if they were not subsidized.
