ATleast 12 inches play in the steering wheel, a loos* steering box and column, and a cab which could be lifted off the chassis were what he found on an articulated vehicle of G. K. Levitt, Ltd:, North Newbald, Insp. E. A. Tiplady told South Hunsley Beason magistrates in Hull last week.
He said that the vehicle was seen by police as it was being driven between Newport and Hull. The driver appeared to have difficulty in keeping it on the road.
The company were fined £20 for using a vehicle with defective steering, and £10 for using it in a dangerous condition. The driver paid 1 on each of two similar charges. Both defendants pleaded guilty.
The magistrates were told that the vehicle was to have been replaced the day after it was checked:
