New drivers' hours regulations are on the way.

To help digest them, Pat Hagan focuses on the 10 things you need to know.

It's 22 years since the EU published the first set of drivers' hours regulations, and a major makeover is coming. From 11 April, haulage firms throughout Europe will need to be up to speed on the revised rules. According to the Freight Transport Association, demand for information on the changes has been growing steadily as the deadline nears.

At its regional briefings, there has been no shortage of bums on seats. "I think most firms know the rules are changing, especially as the legislation was published last April." says the association's compliance information services manager, Sally. Thornley.

The feedback I've been getting suggests large companies are already busy getting all their beads in a row. Smaller firms really need to start thinking about it now," she adds. "I tell hauliers that, although most things in the existing regulations have changed, it's only by a little bit. It's not as if the EU has thrown the baby out with the bathwater."

The EU has spent nearly five years working on the new rules in an attempt to make enforcement easier across all member states. So what are the key features every haulier must be aware of to stay legal? CM lists the 10 major points every haulier needs to know.
