Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The families of two schoolgirls killed in a collision with an artic have made a special plea to drivers to stay off the phone. David Harris reports.

ATRUCK DRIVER whose vehicle struck a car killing two schoolgirls was last week jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Robert Murray, who was driving for NYK Logistic. out of their depot near Findern, Derbyshire, was convicted of causing the death by dangerous driving of Rebecca Casterton and Lauren Brooks. aged 12 and 13.

On 20 January last year Murray had just finished a mobile phone call when his truck hit the back of the Clio in which the girls were trayelling on theA38 as he attempted to rejoin the nearside lane. Judge Paul Glenn said there was "no penalty this court could impose that begins to compensate for such a catastrophic loss of life-.

He accepted that Murray was a hard working, decent man who would continue to be affected by his "preoccupation" with his mobile phone. He also disqualified Murray from driving for two years and said he would have to pass an extended test.

However, the court was told Murray did not intend to return to driving for a living.

The victims' families have appealed to drivers to "think long and hard of the potential lifechanging consequences of their actions and never use their phones while driving".

They welcomed the jail sentence but added: "We know that, whatever the sentence, it can never reflect our feeling of loss and will not bring our daughters back. We are, however, pleased that the legal process is finally at an end."

A spokesman for NYK Logistics stresses: "As a major vehicle operator NYK Logistics is committed to health and safety and makes every effort to ensure that our drivers are trained and assessed.
