by Geoff Frost • A 21-month jail sentence on a man who took an eight-legger from its compound, crashed it through security gates and later demolished a house was upheld on appeal this week.

Three appeal judges backed Peterborough Crown Court's verdict on Clive Robinson for aggravated vehicle taking.

Repairs to the vehicle alone were estimated at £25,000. The court was told that the woman in the demolished house was watching television when the lorry ploughed into her home.

Robinson, of Motum Road, Norwich, not only had his appeal against sentence dismissed, but his bid to have a five-year driving ban reduced was also thrown out. He must retake his driving test at the end of the five years.

Mr Justice Latham said Robinson had taken the vehicle from a compound at Whittlesey in February last year and staff noticed he was having problems with the gear changes.

A police patrol car driver called to the scene had to drive onto the verge after the lorry approached him at high speed in the middle of the road.

Robinson lost control of the truck on a sharp bend and later blamed a steering lock on the vehicle. After it crashed into the house the upper floor collapsed into the living room and the householder had been fortunate in being in another room. But she had been "shattered" by the experience, the appeal judge commented.

Robinson was trapped in the cab when the emergency services arrived.
