• A cache of over 1,000 Second World War bombs and shells was uncovered on a Lancashire haulier's land last week.
The bombs were found below a layer of concrete on land belonging to J W Bird Haulage at Oldbury.
For the company, David Herrington says that HGVs have been driving over the bomb dump for the past nine years: "It is scary. It would have been a hell of a bang — it looks as though they were dumped in a large drainage ditch and covered with concrete," he says.
Army bomb disposal experts loaded the haul on to trucks for disposal, while local roads were sealed off. A hand grenade and a mortar bomb were exploded in situ because they were too dangerous to move.
