• The campaign to persuade the Government to use tax payers' money to improve lorry park and rest facilities on trunk roads has been stalled by ministers.
Transport Secretary Cecil Parkinson says that such facilities must be provided by the private sector, including the haulage industry.
Last year, the Common's Thuisport Select Committee recommended that the Government should pay for adequate roadside services.
Parkinson accepts that a shortage of appropriate facilities exists, but says: "The Department does not propose to give any financial support to the provision of such facilities."
The DTp wants service areas at intervals of 45km, and plans "to fill gaps".
