NOBODY CARES • Some time ago I wrote to Commercial Motor about the difficulty in progressing from driver to management.

After my letter was published a Welsh operator rang me and put forward a job proposition. I wrote to him about it, but he never replied.
Then an operator from Stockport contacted me saying he was interested in opening a southern depot. He came to see me about it, and asked me to ring him if I found any potential properties. After about seven months he tells me he has dropped the idea — no offer to reimburse my costs.
Next, an advert in the local press for a supervisor driver working for a Nottinghambased kitchen supply company; I duly return the application form and receive a letter saying that I am on a short list for interview, date to be fixed. But despite telephone calls and letters I've heard no more from them to this day.
Back to searching the situations vacant pages, many letters, few replies and application forms. Then I saw a local paper advert for an assistant to transport manager so I immediately telephoned; "very sorry he is not here", ring on 2 January 1990'; ring back by early afternoon. I eventually manage to speak to the manat ger who takes my name and address plus a few details about qualifications; he then says he will write to me later that week; definitely by early next week; yes you have guessed, no letter, memo, note or phone call to let me know.
I often wonder whether enquiring customers are treated this way, or is it just others in the same industry, or persons trying to attain a better position for themselves; either way it does nothing to promote the transport industry as efficient and caring.
