SOUTH YORKSHIRE Passenger Transport Executive has given the statutory 90 days' notice to trades unions representing its 5,000 staff and workers that it intends to reduce the workforce by up to 1,600.
'[he move follows plans to reduce the 1,001i strong bus fleet's annual subsidy from million to S:59 million.
This will necessitate the new PTE transport company increasing fare levels by 225 per cent and could mean a 1(1 per cent overall service reduction.
South Yorkshire County Comicil has maintained a low fare policy which kept PTE bus fares unchanged for 11 years, making them by far the lowest in the country.
