MR. A. W. LAUGHTON, general manager of Eaton Axles, Ltd., has joined the board of the company. He was previously commercial manager of Saunders-Roe, Ltd., Ryde.

MR. I. GRAEMP, BRUCE was on Monday re-elected chairman of the Omnibus Society, with MR. W. J. C. STREET as honorary secretary and MR. I. K. D. BLAIR as honorary treasurer. MR. B. KNOWLMAN is honorary editor.

MR. A. E. BUTLER, divisional engineer, central road services, London Transport Executive, has been transferred from the south-east division to the south-west division, consequent upon the retirement Of MR. L. BICHENO, and is succeeded by MR. W. 1, KIRSHNER, divisional engineer, country buses and coaches, south division. The post of assistant rolling stock engineer has been abolished by the Executive, and a new headquarters post created with the title of divisional engineer (general). It has been occupied by MR. R. 13, GILLANDERS.

M. I. R. PATEY, secretary and assistant general manager of Crosville Motor Services, Ltd., has been appointed general manager and director of the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co.,

Ltd., with effect from March 1. He succeeds MR, J. C. DEAN. Mr. Dean is understood to be retiring from business. He is 57 and has been engaged in passenger transport for 43 years. Before the 1914-18 war he served the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd., and afterwards helped to build up the United Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd. His later service included a period as traffic manager of United Automobile Services, Ltd., followed by a move to the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., with whom he remained until his

appointment in Bristol in 1950. He was awarded the O.B.E. in the Birthday Honours of 1948.

A30 MR. LEONARD B. SMITH has been appointed superintendent of the general service section of the sales technical service department at Cricklewood of British Oxygen Gases, Ltd. MR. A. W. STONES has become manager of the western district at Birchgrove, Cardiff. replacing MR. J. E. CLARK.

MR. W. M. DRAVERS, general manager of Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., has been appointed to the executive staff of the British Electric Traction Co., Ltd., and will be appointed to the boards of a number of associated companies. Applications have been invited for the appointment of general manager of Maidstone and District and their subsidiary, Hastings Tramway Co. The two companies have a combined fleet strength of about 900 vehicles. Applications have to be submitted by February 15.

BATTERY WEIGHT HALVED

1-3. A NEW lightweight battery is being

developed by Birlite Batteries, Ltd., a company formed for the purpose by Birfleld Industries, Ltd. It is claimed to be about half the weight and about twothirds of the size of a conventional battery, but to have a similar capacity.

It has an exceptionally low internal resistance, so that it can be charged in about a quarter of the time usually required. A high discharge rate can also be achieved. It is stated that the battery can maintain constant discharge all the time it is in use.

PETITIONS TO COMMONS THREE petitions calling for the early I completion of road works and the provision of funds by means of loans were presented in the House of Commons last week by Lt.-Col. W. H. Bromley-Davenport (Cons., Knutsford), Dr. B. Stross (Lab., Stoke-on-Trent) and Mr. A. Greenwood (Lab., Rossendale). They were signed by 16,908 people in north-west England, 39,129 in the Potteries, Staffs and Lanes, and 89,000 in Lancashire.

PERKINS HIT RECORD NGINE production by F. Perkins Ltd., in October last totalled 7,515— a record for the company since their formation in 1932. The 'figure included over 5,000 vehicle engines.

" Despite the unfavourable conditions in which we are now operating due to the Suez crisis, production figures during January this year are almost as high as the monthly average in 1955." states Mr. M. I. Prichard, deputy managing director.

DISPOSAL of British Road Services' assets up to December 31 last yielded about £26m., the Minister of Transport stated last week. The levy, which ceased on December 31, realized some £12,645,000.
