• Trucks on rural dual carriageways block roadside signs and force other road users to make dangerous manoeuvres to read them, says a report out this week.
Drivers who have to get into position to read the signs also waste time and fuel, says the report by Transport and Road Research Laboratory. Solutions to this problem, such as putting signs on overhead gantries or extra signs on the roadside, are expensive and spoil the environment, it says.
Researchers for the TRRL have carried out a study of danger points where signs are obscured and linked them to traffic flows, speeds and type of vehicles using the road. They say their findings will help planners decide where to put roadsigns in the future.
