HSC FORK-LIFT CODE • The Health and Safety Commission has published a Code of Practice for training fork-lift truck operators in a bid to cut down the number of accidents.
Between 1978 and 1985 fork-lift trucks killed over 180 people in the work place.
OHealth & Safety Commission The new Code of Practice
comes into operation on 1 April 1989 and key points are:
LI Employers must ensure all operators are adequately trained or have sufficient experience.
LI Employers should ensure operation is restricted to authorised operators.
0 Employers should ensure authorisation is only given to existing operators who are adequately trained or have adequate experience.
LI Training should cover the safe use of the lift truck and any handling attachment applicable to a particular workplace.
LI From 1 April 1989 all operators new to lift truck operation must undergo satisfactory basic training in accordance with the Code.
LI Basic training must cover the basic skills and knowledge required for safe operation.
