Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Ford's proposed turbo option on the Transit 2.5-litre diesel engine will only be available as an after-market fitment on existing units. The new ver sion of the 2.5-litre DI diesel has too great a compression ratio for the manufacturer to contemplate the use of a turbo

The news will come as a dis appointment to PSV operators using Ford Transits, who hoped for a turbo conversion on the new 2.5-litre engine, and a commitment from Ford to uprate the power output.

Instead, the company has elected to comply with a forth. coming EEC emissions directive which means the new engine burns its fuel more cleanly, but there is only 4% more power at 52kW (70hp).

Ford claims that it will "con. tinue to give engineering advice" to the turbo converters, but a piston change may be necessary to effect a turbocharged conversion on the new "second generation" unit.

The company claims it did not introduce a turbo version because of the low demand foi a blown Transit diesel engine.
