• Securicor Express, which claims to be Britain's second biggest parcels carrier next to the Post Office, is spending 28 million on a computerised sorting system for its 120 branches.
The system, which will be launched in its Hayes, Middlesex branch on 20 January, will be on-line by the end of the year.
Securicor carries 1.25 million parcels a week in the UK, mainly on large company accounts. It says the computer will take it ahead of its rivals in terms of technology and plans a 15% growth in business each year, with no jobs lost because of the new technology.
Parcels' details will be entered in a bar-code system onto the computer. These will give proof of collection and delivery, and will show where each parcel is in the network.
Securicor uses a system of regional mini-hubs, rather than a centralised hub such as TNT and Parceline use. It says the central hub system is impractical for the number of parcels it carries.
