• Road transport firms could lose business to rail once the Channel Tunnel is built becaus( the railways will be able to offer more competitive rates on long-distance routes, a distribution expert has predicted.
The opening of the Tunnel could reverse a 20-year trend toward road distribution in Britain, says Peter Newson of logistics consultancy Davies and Robertson.
Direct rail links with Europe will enable railways to outperform road operators on many key routes over a 320Iun (200 mile) barrier, he claims.
