A flight of fancy

As I implied in my paragraph in the October 19 issue, the provincial newspaper reporter who wrote the story of a haulier's rise to affluence in six years, took some liberties with the truth.
The haulier, K. Beverley, of Stairfoot, Barnsley, has given me the facts. The Albion fourwheeled tipper that he bought , for £300 late in 1972 was a 1967 model — not 1972. Three years later he purchased a new Foden eight-wheeler and another the following year.
He has since disposed of those vehicles and his fleet.of six now comprises Magirus Deutz and Volvo eight-wheelers with S, T and V registrations. Another Volvo F7 costing more than £35,000 will be delivered on January 1 — a monument to courage and enterprise.
My correspondent, who denies telling the reporter that he had a multi-million-pound business, assures me: "In news-, papers there are sometimes discrepancies between the story told and the story printed." He can say that again!
