TRANSPORT MINISTER Norman Fowler has changed his mind on the implementation programme for tachographs in order to give operators more time for retro-fitting — but all vehicles must still be installed by December 31, 1981.
In a written answer to a question from Meriden MP lain Mills, Mr Fowler said that he had taken account of the views expressed following the publication of his proposals for the fitting of the instrument and that he would be putting his final proposals before Parliament shortly.
The new dates for fitting are Vehicles first registered on or after December 1, 1979: April 1, 1980; those registered after August 1 but before December 1, 1979: June 1, 1980; those registered on or after August 1, 1978 but before August 1, 1979: October 1, 1980.
Vehicles registered on or after August 1, 1977 but before August 1, 1978: January 1, 1981; those registered on or after August 1, 1976 but before August 1, 1977: March I, 1981; those registered on or after August 1, 1975 but before August 1, 1976: May 1, 1981.
Vehicles registered on or after August 1, 1973 but before August 1, 1975: August 1, 1981; vehicles registered before August 1, 1973 must be fitted with the instrument by 31 December, 1981.
