• With a view to promoting the road transport industry, the North Western (Eastern) area Road Haulage Association, the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (Manchester centre), and the Manchester Transport Training Group are jointly occupying a stand at the Daily Express Careers Exhibition, Belle Vue, Manchester. The exhibition which opened on Tuesday and closes tomorrow (December 2) has already been visited by hundreds of school children from the North West and the stand itself has generated much interest.
Mr L. Hibbert, local secretary of the IRTE, said that the aim of the stand, which has cost the three bodies about £200 to run, is to dispel the "diesel gipsy" image which has for so long been associated with the road transport industry.
By means of charts and posters children have been shown that whether they enter the industry as drivers, maintenance mechanics or office staff they still have the same chance to reach a senior position.
Many of the boys who visited the stand were greatly interested to find that lorry driving today is very much a profession.
