• Sunderland's environment committee recommended this week that the handing over of the town's bus undertaking to the Tyneside Passenger Transport Authority should take place next April. The committee instructed corporation officials to obtain the best possible terms for the handover. But the Corporation is likely to have to pay about 1,500,000 to cover the estimated loss for the year 1973-4.
This is because the Sunderland undertaking is being handed over one year earlier than would otherwise be demanded by the provisions of the 1972 Local Government Act. The committee's recommendation was expected to be confirmed by a special meeting of the town council held last night.
