THE PHASED MOVE from London to Kent of the business of Hovell Son and Co. Ltd., manufacturers of confectioners decorations and Christmas crackers, meant a good deal less work for a North London haulier, the Metropolitan LA was told on Tuesday.

Donald Barnes Ltd., of Hilldrop Road, Holloway, Ni, had operated a single vehicle' of 3.5 tons on Contract A licence for Hovell since 1963, said Miss E. Havers, and present circumstances led it to apply for a variation to full A licence.

In fact, Mr. D. T. Barnes told the LA, his company originally had one vehicle on C licence and two on A, but one of the latter was always regarded as a spare vehicle to be used only in case of breakdown; one, however, would shortly be sold.

Since Hovell had altered the circumstances of its business and established a new factory at Yalding, Kent, there was less work for his vehicle to do for them. He hoped that two London hauliers who were particularly busy with shop deliveries at weekends would be able to offer him sufficient work to keep his lorry busy throughout the week. Answering Mr. Richard Yorke, representing the sole objectors, BRS, Mr. Barnes gave his assurance that he had no intention of applying for a further Contract A licence. Mr. T. R. Soames, a director of Hovell, agreed that although his company had used Barnes for a number of years he foresaw little opportunity of using hired transport for more than three or four days of the week.

The Barnes application was in respect of goods mainly for Hovel! within 100 miles of Kings Cross, a radius that led Mr. Yorke to investigate the destination Hovell had in mind. Although there were occasional runs to Southampton and Bournemouth, it appeared that most could be covered by a 50-mile normal user and Miss Havers accepted the radius on behalf of her client. The application was granted as amended.
