AN A-LICENCE application was adjourned in Manchester on Monday so that the applicant, B.P. Molyneux of Manchester, could answer allegations of illegal operation. Mr. C. R. Hodgson, North Western LA, told the applicant's brother: "He is advertising for the carrying of furniture which he is not entitled to do. He is breaking the law. He must stop it at once or he may
be prosecuted."
Mr. S. Moss, who was representing six of the 12 objectors, told the inquiry: "I have a list of advertisements which have appeared throughout the whole of this year asking for removals and offering to give estimates for removals," and asked under what authority he was advertising.
The applicant was a licence broker for secondhand furniture, said his brother, and operated a furniture van under C licence. In answer to the LA he said he thought his brother was paid for loads carried.
Mr. Molyneux was seeking an A licence for a 4-ton van to be acquired to carry household furniture and effects throughout Great Britain. A letter of support from the Family Welfare Association of Manchester and Salford was submitted but Mr. J. S. Lawton, objecting for Pickfords Ltd., recollected that the association had recently supported another application for its work, which had been successful.
As no witnesses were in court, Mr. Hodgson explained that substantial evi dence would have to be presented on the next occasion to support such a grant and adjourned the inquiry so that the applicant, who was in hospital, could attend.
On the same day, B. Harding, Stockport, was granted a new B licence for a 44-ton tipper to be acquired. He told the LA he had paid 200 for goodwill to J. Morton Ltd., from whose licence one vehicle would be deleted.
In order to meet objections, he had amended his application and was now applying to carry: "Solid fuel, building materials, quarry products, and road materials within 25 miles; goods for Llewellyn and Co. and solid fuel for E. and F. Beattie Ltd. ex railway concentration depots, within 60 miles".
