TO argue that road transport operators were not paying enough towards road upkeep was unacceptable, Mr. Peter Walker, Tory Shadow Transport Minister, told a crowded meeting of the NAFWR Metropolitan area on Tuesday. The THC itself had engaged experts on this very subject, and their view was that road operators were paying their fair share.

Road haulage alone now paid about £370m. a year in tax, he said, while total expenditure on roads was £450m.—and now a further £30m. tax was proposed by the Government.

And he urged the rousing of public opinion by showing just how the White Paper's proposals would affect everyone.

Meanwhile the Nafwr has submitted its formal views to the Ministry, and has asked for: control of light vehicles through the C. and U. Regulations; reduction of the weight limit from 30cwt to 25cwt; imposition of quality licensing to fleets of five or more light vehicles; the continuation of the right of objection by individual operators; and careful definition of the rights of objection by unions and local authorities.
